Buffalo coins gold are also called the American Buffalo or gold buffalo. They are bullion coins made up of 24 carat gold. In the year 2006 United States Mint offered these coins for sale for the first time. Within one month they were ready for shipping. The design of the coin is greatly admirable with an Indian Head nickel. As American bison was designed on the reverse side of the coin, it has become its nickname. That was the first pure gold coin; 24 carat that the United States Government minted for the public. It has the legal tender value of US $50.
The design of the Buffalo coins gold is a changed version of the Indian Head nickel of James Earle Fraser issued in the year 1913. James Earle Faster’s design is considered as one of the best designs of the USA coins. This design was also used on Smithsonian commemorative coin in the year 2001. The face of the Buffalo coin depicts a Native American as a combination of the three chiefs of the different American Indian tribes, Iron Tail, Two Moons and Big Tree. On the back side of the coin he designed an American Bison that is usually referred as a buffalo. It is believed that the bison depicted on the reverse side of the coin is the Black Diamond; a bison lived during 1910s in the Central Park Zoo in the New York City. It was the model for Fraser to sketch the bison’s picture. There is a story in air that while drawing the bison’s picture Fraser use to snuck beside the Black Diamond having somebody to distract the animal other wise it would turn to face Fraser and he couldn’t draw the picture he wanted.
National collector’s mint is a private company that produces a recreated gold clad that is a version of the Buffalo coin. The company offers that gold clad for sale at $ 19.95 on TV. Unlike the Buffalo gold coins this gold clad is gold coated in a thin gold layer. That is why they are specified as ‘gold clad’. They are not for legal tender. This gold clad is sold just for recreation by a private company advertised as a proof of theBuffalo coins gold.
