Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf
ByCanadian Palladium Maple Leaf
Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf is the newest member of the bullion coins issued under the Maple Leaf category. This bullion coin was the first ever to be produced by a government, being issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. There were precedents to the concept of palladium coins; the first being issued by Sierra Leone in 1966, but the was the first to be produced as a bullion coin.
The palladium maple leaf was produced from 2005 to 2007; each round weighing 1 ounce and the palladium used was of .9995-pure quality. The coins were given a face value of fifty Canadian dollars and issued at a price of more than a thousand dollars each.
The art adorning the coins was an image of Queen Elizabeth II and carried the inscriptions “Elizabeth II”, the denomination “$50 Dollars”, and the date on one side. The other side was inscribed with the Canadian Maple Leaf. “Canada”, “9995 Fine Palladium”, “1 oz”, and “9995 Palladium Pur” were also included with the Canadian maple leaf to complete the design.
The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint as an alternative to the Platinum Maple Leaf. These coins were extensively tested and each test left the coins with a mark to attest to the Maple Leaf authenticity. Two different lots of palladium blanks were used to test the coins. The coins tested in the first lot of blanks were marked with an “A” Mint Mark to identify it as coming from test Lot A. Similarly coins from the other lot were marked with a “B” Mint Mark to identify the as product of the Lot B.
The was produced in a relatively small number due to dictates of the demand. The first year of production saw 40,000 coins, but thereafter the Royal Canadian Mint reduced the production. The third year into production saw only a paltry amount of 15,000 coins ending in a discontinuation of the production. Limited distribution and being the only government issued bullion coin; the charm will never leave this .
