Palladium Coin
ByPalladium Coin
Palladium coin is a coinage recognized internationally under the statutes of ISO 4217. But this is not the only reason for its fame and popularity; it has also come to the fore as major investment option. Being a coin, it has the advantage of being a lightweight and easy to transport investment costing the investor lesser shipping costs. Ironically, the first issue of palladium coin was in the Spanish colonies of South America where palladium was used to mint counterfeit gold coins.
The first official release of palladium coins was in the African country of Sierra Leone. Soon after, a South Pacific country, Tonga issued coinage commemorating its new king. With this began a new trend in currency, as more countries began issuing their own commemorative currency. Today, Canada, the Soviet Union, France, Portugal, Russia, China, Australia and Slovakia have all issued their own versions of commemorative palladium coin.
Palladium itself is a rare metal of the platinum group of transition elements. This metal has long been the low cost substitute for its more expensive counterpart, platinum. Palladium is one of the most used metals in the jewelry industry as it can be alloyed with gold to produce white gold. Palladium mining is a part of all the major platinum mining companies in countries like Canada and South Africa. The lion’s share of palladium supply is controlled by Russia and it has managed to keep its palladium amounts and status a state secret for the past few decades.
As for the coin itself, the erstwhile Soviet Union was responsible for minting the most palladium coin in the world. The record of the lowest palladium mintage belongs to Canada with its Canadian Big & Little Bear Constellations. The Royal Canadian Mint minted no more than 1200 coins that included 4 versions corresponding to 4 seasons. Canada has also minted the Palladium Maple Leaf coin that each comprised almost 99.95% pure palladium.
This is the beauty of investing in the palladium coin as each coin is about 92% to 99% pure palladium which means that the coin is of the same value as the metal itself. Companies have now succeeded in minting a special kind of palladium coin that is free of tarnishing in the air. This coin is whiter than a platinum coin and is now being considered more precious than its silver counterparts. Techniques have also been developed which make it easier to mint custom coins as well.
All these properties have now resulted in the increasing demand of palladium. Investors are now more and more interested in the very real and newly opened avenue of investment, the palladium coin.
