St Gaudens gold coins are usually known as double eagle coins and are named after its designer St. Gaudens. He was professionally an artist and sculptor who designed the original St Gaudens double eagle coins which are minted between the years 1907 and 1933. Even after when the coins features where altered the designers name was marked below the original St Gaudens double eagle coins minted date. The St Gaudens gold coins were minted in three mints located in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.

These coins are marked with first letter of there location after their minted date. These gold coins are the designed in the desires of Theodore Roosevelt who took efforts for the making artistic coins. St Gaudens gold coins have undergone many corrections before there making process was completed. The gold coins were minted in two denominations such as $20 and $10. The front sides of the coins are designed with the lady liberty having the Torch of Freedom with an olive branch symbolizing peace and along with the nation’s capital as the background. The other side depicts a Bald eagle flying over the sun.
These Bald eagles are recognized as the national birds of United States of America. The coins edges are inscribed with letters E Pluberius Unum along with stars. The St Gaudens gold coins are fabricated in the composition of 90% gold and 10% copper. These coins have the dimensions of 34mm of diameter and 2mm of thickness. The coins weighs up to 33.436gms in which the gold content is approximately equal to 30.093gms. During the years 1907 and 1908 the coins were minted without motto and latter the motto “In God We Trust” was added to the coins.
In the years 1917 to 1919 the coins were not produced and at the year 1933 the complete productions of these coins were closed. It was estimated that exactly 445,500 1933 St. Gaudens gold double eagle coins are minted. But these coins were not lawfully circulated within the currency markets. Hence within short productions periods there was melting down of St Gaudens gold coins.
